CAT C13 Identification: Serial Prefix and Turbo Arrangement
Back to the ATP Garage guide libraryCaterpillar / C13 / Engine identity and turbo parts selection
Quick answer: Match a C13 replacement to the complete engine serial number, arrangement, emissions/application record and installed component. For a turbo request, also identify the required assembly and mounting arrangement. A prefix or "C13 ACERT" description narrows the question; it does not complete the fitment check.
Application: This guide uses on-highway C13 examples. The 2007 manual and 2023 preview have their own coverage; the 2010 emissions comparison concerns specified Van Hool coaches, and the May 17, 2013 turbo case concerns certain high-horsepower LEE1-Up engines. No universal part interchange, production-year range or turbo installation procedure is established.
Which C13 identifiers should be recorded?
Caterpillar's SEBU8087-09, July 2007, identifies engines using serial, performance-specification and arrangement numbers, with modification numbers in some cases. It explains that these records help determine the components originally included with the engine. [1] Preserve safe, readable engine-label photos with the written details.
Add the truck VIN, vehicle/application details and known replacement-engine history. If a component has already been changed, keep its actual markings and the earlier repair record. Make any discrepancy between the vehicle build information and installed engine visible to the provider and supplier.
A complete serial number is more useful than its first three characters alone. Ask the provider to name the engine application selected in its information system, then confirm that it agrees with the hardware currently fitted. Do not fill a missing arrangement number with a similar truck's record.
What do KCB, LEE and ACERT establish?
| Evidence | Verified scope | Ordering limit |
|---|---|---|
| KCB and LEE | Caterpillar's on-highway kit catalog lists both under C13 ACERT. [6] | ACERT wording alone does not establish the required component. |
| KCB EPA2004 / LEE EPA2007 | Van Hool SB1237 makes this distinction for its specified T2145/C2045 coach applications. [3] | Do not apply that bulletin's vehicle scope or service schedule to every truck. |
| LEE1-Up and S3C1-Up | The official January 2023 SEBU8087-16 preview identifies these as C13 on-highway coverage. [2] | A manual-cover match does not select a replacement turbo. |
Record the installed emissions label and the service provider's confirmed application. Keep the label's identity with the engine record rather than inferring it only from the truck's advertised model year. A coach-specific bulletin and an engine manual answer different parts of the identification question.
The Cat catalog also warns that changes to the manufacturer's configuration can affect fitment. [6] If the engine or air system has been modified, state what is known and ask which current matching information applies. An unfamiliar assembly needs verification before a replacement is selected.
What should be identified before ordering a C13 turbo?
The 2007 C13 model-view labels distinguish low-pressure and high-pressure turbochargers, plus a precooler, CGI-related items and an aftertreatment regeneration device. [1] Those labels belong to that manual's application; they are not a universal hardware list for every C13.
Ask the repair report to name the exact assembly and the finding that supports replacement. "Low boost" describes a complaint; it does not identify which assembly is required. Keep the diagnosis separate from the application check, and have the provider use current matching service instructions for any tests or repair.
For the parts request, include readable installed-component markings, mounting/application details and safe photos of relevant connections. Ask the supplier to confirm the complete assembly and supplied contents. Similar flanges or an engine-family match do not establish that tubes, drains, hoses and installation items are correct.
Why can the drain line and mounting arrangement matter?
Caterpillar's May 17, 2013 Truck Engine News describes a turbo/accessory change for certain high-horsepower C13 LEE1-Up applications. Its tables separate high-, mid- and low-mount arrangements, along with specific bus/low-cab variants. It states a factory effective point of LEE24965-Up and backward applicability within the stated application. [4]
The bulletin requires associated parts and warns that omitting the changed turbo drain line can cause a seal concern and oil entering the air system. [4] This is a historical example of why the assembly and accessory package must be checked together. It is not a current ordering list or proof that the same repair applies to your engine.
Ask the supplier and provider whether the installed arrangement already incorporates the relevant change, which current parts information applies, and what is included in the proposed package. Keep the documented answer with the quotation. Do not assume that the serial cutoff alone identifies the entire repair.
What should go to the supplier?
Send the full engine identity, emissions/application record, diagnosed component, installed markings, mounting details and known modification history. Ask for confirmation of exact application, supplied contents and any associated items the matched service information requires.
Caterpillar's public Help Center says model-only searches are less precise than serial-number searches. My Equipment provides routes to parts manuals and SIS. [5] Use the exact installed-engine record for that lookup; a search result is a starting point for the final application confirmation.
Ask ATP to check the documented application
Use ATP's part-fitment request with the identifiers and safe component photos. Application, package contents and availability require confirmation. For a remanufactured option, also review the core-return checklist before placing the order.
Common C13 identification and turbo questions
Does C13 ACERT mean KCB and LEE use the same parts?
No. The catalog grouping does not establish interchangeability; verify the full application and installed component.
Can the truck model year select the turbo?
No. Keep the complete engine identity and actual assembly/mounting details with the request.
Does the 2013 change cover every LEE engine and turbo?
No. It concerns the specified high-horsepower applications and arrangements, with its stated serial scope.
Does LEE24965-Up identify everything needed for a repair?
No. Confirm the installed configuration, relevant current information and associated package contents.
Is a low-boost complaint enough to order a turbo?
No. Obtain the diagnostic conclusion and then verify the exact replacement application.
What if the engine has been replaced or modified?
Disclose the history, document the installed hardware and resolve mismatches before selecting parts.
