Mack MP7/MP8 Coolant Loss: Leak Origins and Test Evidence
Back to the ATP Garage guide libraryMack / MP7 and MP8 / Coolant loss
Quick answer: Narrow Mack MP7/MP8 coolant loss by matching the installed engine and truck build, the actual leak origin and the applicable test. A wet pump area, low-level warning or suspected EGR cooler is a starting observation. Confirm the source before choosing a housing, seal, hose or cooler.
Application: May 2008 M-293-003 distinguishes US04 MP7 from US07 MP7/MP8 cooler-test hardware. The external-leak examples below remain MP8-only: US07 bypass housing, a limited MY2019/2020 pump-housing case and certain MY2023/2024 AN upper hoses. No universal pressure, repair or current campaign entitlement is supplied.
Which MP7 or MP8 and truck configuration are being diagnosed?
Begin with the truck VIN, installed engine model/serial, emissions identification and vehicle build date. Add the transmission and any replacement-engine history. Photograph the component and nearby connections so a parts request names the actual assembly rather than an approximate location. Keep the build date separate from the model year when comparing a bulletin.
Mack's April 2023 body-builder document uses typical engine views and explicitly does not cover every chassis variation. It also identifies low coolant level and high coolant temperature among conditions that can trigger shutdown protection. Follow the actual truck's warning response and move to a safe stopping place; repeated restarts after a protection shutdown can damage the engine. [1]
Write down what happened before the level fell: operating conditions, warning sequence and recent cooling work. An owner's description and a workshop test answer different questions. Keep both, and label observations separately from a proposed cause. A useful report explains how the technician connected the observed loss to one component.
What do the dated MP8-only external-leak examples cover?
| Manufacturer example | Application that must match | Finding needed |
|---|---|---|
| FSB 262-005, February 2015 | US07 MP8; housing entries differ by transmission | Leak at the coolant bypass housing [2] |
| K05913580, September 2019 update | MY2019/2020; build March 1, 2018-May 28, 2019; listed Mack TE, AN, GR and PI models | Trace the leak to the pump-housing/oil-cooler-duct-cover joint [3] |
| S3586, September 2023 historical copy | Certain MY2023/2024 AN/MP8; specified emissions and build dates | Upper-hose deformation, leakage or lifting-bracket interference [4] |
US07 bypass housing: FSB 262-005 describes a revised housing seal and housing for a leak at that location. Its mechanical/mDrive and Allison entries differ. Confirm transmission and assembly details rather than selecting a housing because the engine says MP8. The 2015 bulletin does not establish current availability. [2]
Pump-housing joint: K05913580 distinguishes front-right runoff from its confirmed source at the coolant pump housing and oil cooler duct cover. Its March 2018-May 2019 build window is narrower than the MY2019/2020 heading. It also notes that incorrect seal seating can leave leakage after repair. A photograph of runoff alone does not establish that case. [3]
Upper radiator hose: S3586 describes collapsing or deformed upper hoses on certain AN trucks, with leakage or contact at the engine lifting bracket. Its MP8 application lists EM-EC01, EM-EU5 and EM-USA21 and builds May 31, 2022-May 19, 2023. The cited historical copy lists September 30, 2024 expiration. Confirm current VIN-specific campaign status with Mack; this is not a present-day free-repair offer. [4]
Use these examples as three different questions for the repair report. Which application matches? Where did the fresh leak begin? Which assembly and mating surface were confirmed? If none matches, ask for the current diagnostic path for that vehicle instead of forcing the complaint into an older bulletin.
What makes an MP7/MP8 EGR cooler test meaningful?
Mack M-293-003 is May 2008 guidance; 2022 is its public-file storage year. It distinguishes US04 MP7 test hardware from US07 MP7/MP8 hardware and separates internal gas-path leakage from coolant-port test-plug sealing problems. [5]
Request the matched setup, conditions, leak location and completed result. A failed pressure test needs that context before a cooler is condemned. The historical setup does not establish a pressure or procedure for every later MP7/MP8. [5]
If no external leak is confirmed, ask which loss paths were tested and what remains unresolved. Preserve negative findings under their actual test conditions, then request the evidence supporting the proposed repair and its verification.
What should the coolant-loss evidence record include?
- Application: VIN, installed MP7/MP8 serial/emissions, build date, transmission and relevant installation changes.
- Complaint: warning text, loss history, operating conditions and recent repairs.
- Localization: fresh source photos, the exact joint or component and the method used to distinguish it from runoff.
- Test: applicable procedure/version, conditions, measured result and whether test-fixture leakage was excluded.
- Repair verification: confirmed assembly, work performed and the documented check that addressed the original complaint.
Mack describes VIN-based catalog lookup through PartsASIST. Combine that application record with the installed component and confirmed finding when requesting parts. A VIN lookup does not replace diagnosis, and no product fitment or inventory is established by this guide. [6]
Common Mack MP7/MP8 questions
Does front-right coolant runoff prove the pump is bad?
No. The limited 2019 case requires tracing leakage to its specified housing/duct-cover surfaces. Record the actual origin and match the build window before applying that case.
Does the 2015 bypass-housing bulletin cover all MP8 engines?
No. It names US07 MP8 and distinguishes transmission applications. Verify the installed engine and housing; do not extend it to every emissions generation.
Does S3586 mean my upper hose is covered today?
No. The cited historical copy expired in 2024. Current campaign status and applicability require a VIN-specific check with Mack.
Does a failed cooler pressure test prove an internal cooler leak?
The leak location matters. The May 2008 bulletin distinguishes gas-path leakage from test-plug sealing problems. Ask which setup and observation support the finding.
Which pressure should I use for an unidentified MP7/MP8 cooler?
Obtain the current procedure for that installed cooler and application. This guide does not transfer an old pressure or test setup to an unidentified engine.
What should I send before requesting replacement cooling parts?
Send VIN, installed engine serial/emissions, build and transmission details, component photos and the localized test finding. State whether the request concerns a hose, seal, housing or cooler.
Do the three MP8 external-leak cases establish an MP7 repair?
No. Their engine, chassis, emissions and build limits remain separate. An MP7 requires its own localized finding and matching service information; the family relationship does not transfer those cases.

Send the application and confirmed finding
Use the fitment verification form with VIN, installed engine serial and emissions, component photos and the diagnostic report. Identify the requested assembly before choosing a replacement. The MP7/MP8 identification guide helps organize those details.
