Ford 6.7 Power Stroke Oil Service: Capacity, Specification and Duty
Back to the ATP Garage guide libraryFord / 6.7 Power Stroke / Oil service verification
Quick answer: For the 2024 F-650/750 6.7L diesel, Ford lists 17.0 qt (16.1 L), including the oil filter. [1] Verify the actual truck, installed engine and matching manual before using that figure. Oil selection also needs the specified viscosity and Ford specification; a capacity number does not establish the service interval.
Application: The capacity, viscosity and schedule examples below are from the USA 2024 F-650/750 manual. A separate 2025 F-650/750 oil-check example is labeled explicitly. These examples do not establish an all-year F-Super Duty or medium-duty capacity chart.
Which truck and installed configuration should be identified?
Write down the full model, model year, VIN and installed engine/build. Preserve any engine or oil-pan replacement history, and identify the filter being serviced. Start with the manual supplied with the vehicle, then reconcile relevant current manufacturer information with the service provider. Ford notes that online manuals may differ from printed versions and may describe equipment that is absent or operates differently on an individual vehicle. [1]
Keep the Ford 6.7 identification record with the service request. "Ford 6.7" is a useful search term, but it leaves the truck series and installed configuration unresolved. A remembered quantity from another fleet vehicle is not evidence for this one. If a previous service invoice disagrees with the matched manual, document the discrepancy and resolve it before treating either value as the approved fill.
What does the published capacity actually include?
| Application | Manufacturer-listed capacity | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| USA 2024 F-650/750, 6.7L diesel | 17.0 qt (16.1 L), including the oil filter [1] | Use only after matching the actual vehicle and installed configuration |
Preserve the heading with the number. A filter-inclusive capacity is not simply an amount to add to an engine that already contains oil. Ask which service is being performed, what was drained and which filter was replaced. Keep any changed pan, dipstick or installed hardware in the application review rather than assuming a broad model-year listing settles the question.
Confirm the final level using the applicable checking method. As a separate example, the 2025 F-650/750 manual specifies level-ground and drain-back conditions and warns against overfilling. It also calls for service when readings remain above maximum. This 2025 checking guidance does not establish a different-year capacity or replace the actual truck's instructions. [4]
How should viscosity and the Ford specification be matched?
The 2024 F-650/750 diesel page pairs SAE 10W-30 with WSS-M2C171-F1. Its alternatives retain that specification: 5W-40 for severe duty, 5W-40 or 15W-40 for the stated biodiesel branch, and 0W-40 for its extremely cold-climate branch. Read the full conditions and temperature chart for the actual application. [1]
Keep both the viscosity grade and specification in the purchase and service record. An SAE grade by itself leaves the specification unanswered; a broad diesel-oil description leaves both questions open. Ask for the actual product documentation rather than approving an oil from container color, a nickname or an assumption that all oils in the same viscosity are equivalent.
Record the expected temperature range, duty and fuel use before choosing among the manufacturer's branches. An alternative listed for a particular condition should retain that condition in the work order. This article does not approve an ATP oil product, another specification as interchangeable, a supplemental additive or a blanket viscosity choice for every Ford 6.7 truck.
Why do mileage, time, engine hours and duty all matter?
For the 2024 F-650/750 diesel normal schedule, Ford uses the instrument-cluster oil-change indication and states a ceiling of one year/10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 350 engine hours between services. The diesel footnotes also call for resetting the oil-life monitor after the oil and filter change. These are limits for the cited application, not permission to ignore an earlier indication. [2]
The separate diesel special-conditions schedule must also be checked. For dusty or sandy operation it lists oil and filter service every 7,500 miles (12,000 km), six months or 300 engine hours. Off-road, extended-idle and other rows have their own wording; do not substitute a neighboring gasoline or fuel-filter interval. [3]
| Record | What to retain | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mileage | Odometer at the last and proposed service | Distance is one scheduling input |
| Time | Date of the last completed service | A low-mileage truck still has elapsed time |
| Engine hours | Available hour reading and stationary-use history | Work can accumulate without much road distance |
| Duty | Actual dusty, off-road, idle, load and temperature conditions | Select the matching diesel schedule row |
| Oil-life message | Exact indication and service completion | Keep the monitor record with the performed work |
A useful fleet reminder keeps these fields together rather than tracking road mileage alone. If an hour reading or previous date is unknown, flag it for the service provider instead of inventing a starting value. Confirm which limit becomes due first and which operating-condition row applies to the way the truck is actually used.
What belongs in the completed oil-service record?
Retain the truck identity, manual section used, oil product and specification, viscosity, filter identity, quantity added, final level assessment, date, mileage and engine hours. Record the next applicable service basis and any unresolved discrepancy. A monitor reset should accompany a recorded service, not stand in for proof that the oil and filter were changed.
Keep an oil-pressure warning separate from a routine scheduling question. The 2025 F-650/750 oil-check page directs a safe stop and engine shutdown for a running-engine pressure warning; it does not authorize continuing because the dipstick reading looks acceptable. Follow the actual vehicle's warning instructions and obtain service. No universal oil-pressure test limit is supplied here. [4]
For a fitment request, send the installed filter or assembly details and any hardware changes with the truck record. For a regeneration complaint during the same visit, retain the separate regeneration and derate evidence. Do not turn two maintenance observations into an unverified shared cause.
Common commercial Ford 6.7 questions
Is the example capacity valid for every 6.7 Power Stroke?
No. It is a stated model-year and truck application; match the actual manual and installed configuration.
Does the capacity heading matter?
Yes. Keep filter inclusion and the service being performed attached to the number.
Is an SAE viscosity alone enough to approve an oil?
No. Verify the applicable Ford specification and the conditions for the selected grade.
Can a low-mileage work truck ignore engine hours?
Keep available hours, elapsed time, mileage and the matching duty schedule together.
Does resetting the monitor prove service was completed?
No. Retain the actual oil/filter service record and final assessment.
Does an acceptable dipstick reading settle an oil-pressure warning?
No. Follow the actual warning response and preserve the separate diagnostic finding.

These sources support the stated applications. Dated bulletins do not establish a diagnosis, current coverage or component interchange for an unidentified truck. Current matching service information governs the repair.
