Quick answer: An MP7/MP8 that cranks without starting needs a verified fuel-system application, complete code/event record and measured diagnostic finding. First distinguish a rotating engine from a starter that never engages. For the common-rail cases below, a fuel-pressure code alone does not identify a pump or injector to replace.

Application: The technical examples explicitly name MP7/MP8: K94743326 concerns MY2018/2019 US17+OBD16/OBD18 common-rail P009B-13; K40331909 concerns US17-and-newer common-rail contamination. These are not procedures for every earlier MP7/MP8. Starting precautions are from April 2023 Mack instructions.

What must be confirmed before using these cases on an MP7?

The two technical cases explicitly include MP7, with the common-rail and emissions limits stated below. They do not classify every older MP7 fuel system. Identify the installed engine serial, emissions and actual fuel-system configuration before choosing a test or part. [2] [3]

Which installed MP7/MP8 fuel system does the diagnosis cover?

Collect VIN, engine model and serial, emissions label, build date and replacement-engine history before choosing a test. Ask the service provider to identify the installed fuel system and the matching current diagnostic information. “MP7/MP8” describes the engine family; the common-rail label and stated emissions scope in these cases still have to match.

Keep an engine replacement or changed installation visible in the record. A chassis description, an engine photograph and the installed serial can answer different identification questions. The MP7/MP8 identification guide provides a place to organize the information before a component request. Do not apply a shared-platform Volvo procedure solely because an assembly looks similar.

Mack's April 2023 body-builder material uses typical configurations and does not cover every chassis variation. It prohibits ether and other combustible starting aids. Follow the actual vehicle's starting limits and starter-cooling instructions rather than repeating attempts to obtain one more observation. [1]

What should the first starting record establish?

Observation Record to keep Question it answers
No engine rotation Starter response, display messages and engagement checks Is this actually a no-crank complaint?
Engine rotates but does not run Observed cranking behavior, conditions and diagnostic capture Which event is being diagnosed?
Fuel-pressure or injector codes Complete codes and status, test method and findings What evidence supports the proposed cause?
Recent service or fueling What changed and when the symptom first appeared Which event history belongs with the test results?

Some starters have engagement protection associated with conditions such as temperature, transmission neutral or clutch position. That observation belongs in the no-crank branch; it is not proof of a fuel fault in an engine that is already rotating. The actual installation controls which checks apply. [1]

Record whether the complaint is cold, hot, intermittent or present after recent work. Keep warning messages and all active or stored codes with the event, including their full suffixes. Preserve the original record before repairs so the post-repair check can be compared with the same complaint.

A useful measurement names the test location, units, operating condition and applicable limit. If a report only says “fuel pressure low,” ask which circuit was measured, under which condition and against which application-specific information. This guide supplies no universal cranking-speed, fuel-pressure, electrical or timing threshold.

Why does P009B-13 change the order of the cited diagnosis?

K94743326 names MP7/MP8 common-rail engines and a MY2018/2019 US17+OBD16/US17+OBD18 application. When P009B-13 is present in that case, it directs diagnosis of the pressure-relief control open circuit first. Other pressure codes, including P0087, P016F and P1036, may accompany it; the remaining problem must be verified after the repair before those codes are pursued separately. [2]

Keep the exact code, wiring/connector observations and completed circuit results together. The case supports a code-specific diagnostic sequence; it does not prove that every no-start has that fault or authorize a pump, valve or harness purchase from a code alone. Match current wiring information before testing. [2]

Ask the repair report to distinguish three statements: the code was present, a test found a defect, and a repair corrected the original event. Those are separate milestones. If a pressure complaint remains after a confirmed circuit repair, keep the new evidence rather than treating the earlier code list as several already-proven component failures.

What evidence supports a DEF-in-fuel investigation?

K40331909 covers MP7/MP8 US17-and-newer common-rail engines. DEF contamination can cause no-start, injector electrical codes or pressure problems, sometimes without codes. Acceptable low-pressure results do not settle the high-pressure question. [3]

Its evidence includes sample location, separation, deposits and corrosion. Injector haze alone cannot exclude DEF contamination. Request the sampling method, observations and confirmed finding. [3]

Keep the confirmed contamination finding distinct from the eventual repair scope. Ask the provider which affected circuits or components have been assessed under current service information and how the finished repair will be checked. This guide does not reproduce a flushing recipe or turn the historical repair list into a shopping list for an unconfirmed complaint.

What should be confirmed before selecting starting or fuel parts?

  • Actual application: VIN, installed engine serial/emissions and identified fuel-system configuration.
  • Original event: engine rotation, starting conditions, recent work/fueling and complete code status.
  • Confirmed finding: named test, relevant limit, result and a clear distinction between electrical, supply and contamination evidence.
  • Requested assembly: component label and connection photos tied to the diagnostic finding.
  • Verification: the post-repair starting result and any remaining warnings or codes.

Mack's PartsASIST page describes VIN-based catalog lookup. Use that application record with installed-component details when a diagnosis supports a replacement. Catalog identification and diagnostic confirmation serve different purposes. No ATP fuel component is linked here because matching fitment has not been verified. [4]

Common Mack MP7/MP8 questions

Is every MP7/MP8 crank/no-start a common-rail problem?

No. Identify the installed fuel system first. The cited common-rail cases have explicit emissions and model-year scope; they do not establish a procedure for every MP7/MP8.

What is the difference between no-crank and crank/no-start?

No-crank means the engine does not rotate through the starting attempt. Crank/no-start means it rotates but does not run. Preserve that distinction in the diagnostic request.

Does P009B-13 prove a fuel pump has failed?

No. The cited MY2018/2019 case prioritizes its open-circuit diagnosis and verification of any remaining pressure complaint. Confirm the actual defect before selecting parts.

Does no stored code rule out DEF in the fuel?

No. The cited common-rail case allows contamination without codes; confirm it through the applicable diagnosis.

Can white residue alone settle the contamination question?

No. Injector haze alone cannot exclude contamination. Keep the sampling evidence and confirmed findings.

What fuel pressure should an unidentified MP7/MP8 show while cranking?

Use the current test and limit for its installed fuel system, serial and emissions configuration. A generic family name is insufficient to choose a pressure threshold.

Does an MP7 badge establish the US17 common-rail test?

No. Match the installed fuel system, emissions and full diagnostic record. The cited cases have their own applications; an older engine needs its own current service information.
