CAT C15 Oil Capacity: Match the Prefix, Sump and Filters
Back to the ATP Garage guide libraryCaterpillar / C15 / Oil service and installed configuration
Quick answer: Match the installed C15 and its oil system before choosing a refill quantity. Two dated on-highway examples differ: 38 L (40 qt) for the cited BXS/MXS standard-sump example, and 38.5 L (41 qt) for the cited SDP/B5R example. Both include standard factory oil filtration; auxiliary filtration needs separate accounting. [1] [2] Use the current matching manual and the verified oil-level gauge for the final service decision.
Application: These are historical on-highway examples: SEBU7695-06, October 2005, BXS1-Up/MXS1-Up, and SEBU8087-09, July 2007, SDP1-Up/B5R1-Up. They are not a capacity specification for every C15, 6NZ/MBN engine, industrial engine, generator, replacement pan or modified installation.
How much oil do the cited C15 examples take?
| Manufacturer example | Approximate listed refill | Basis and limit |
|---|---|---|
| BXS1-Up/MXS1-Up example, October 2005 | 38 L (40 qt) | C15 deep-standard sump, standard factory filters; SEBU7695-06 table 7. [1] |
| SDP1-Up/B5R1-Up example, July 2007 | 38.5 L (41 qt) | C15 column, standard factory filters; SEBU8087-09 table 4. [2] |
| Auxiliary oil-filter system | Confirm its own specified capacity | Add the applicable auxiliary amount to the matching base figure; do not count standard filters twice. [2] |
Keep the printed units and approximate basis attached to the figure. Do not silently combine a number from one edition with a filter note, pan description or calibration step from another. A quantity copied without its application is incomplete service information.
The official Caterpillar preview shows SEBU8087-16, January 2023, covering C15 SDP/B5R. It confirms a later edition exists, but its public preview does not show refill values. [3] Ask the service provider to verify the current value for your configuration rather than treating the 2007 figure as the latest specification.
What should be identified on the truck?
Start with the C15 serial-prefix and ACERT identification guide. Give the provider the complete engine serial number, arrangement identification, truck VIN and known replacement-engine history. Ask the service record to name the publication and configuration used for the capacity decision.
Record the installed pan and dipstick details, standard filter arrangement and any auxiliary filter equipment. Retain safe label photos and previous service documentation when available. If a pan, dipstick or filtration arrangement has been changed, make that history explicit before choosing an amount.
Distinguish what is confirmed from what is assumed. A service invoice saying "C15 oil change" does not identify the pan, filter package or refill basis. Ask for the missing details rather than using the engine-family wording to fill those gaps.
What if the refill quantity and dipstick do not agree?
The 2005 C15 gauge-calibration section identifies installation angle and slant as relevant to the indicated level. It calls for checking gauge markings at the first oil change and recording the established system capacity. [1] Have a qualified provider resolve a mismatch using the complete current procedure.
Do not keep adding oil simply to make a remembered capacity agree with an unverified mark. Likewise, do not assume that a familiar dipstick belongs to the currently installed arrangement. Preserve the actual amount added, the observed reading and the conditions of the check for the provider to assess.
A capacity table, a calibration quantity and an oil top-up answer different questions. State whether the request concerns routine drained refill, a changed installation or oil added between services. This guide does not give a dry-engine fill or a dipstick re-marking procedure.
What should the next service record include?
- Engine identity and the matching manual edition used.
- Installed pan, gauge and standard/auxiliary filter identification.
- Whether the work was a routine refill, top-up or configuration change.
- Actual quantity added, recorded units and verified final-level result.
- Provider findings if the amount and indication did not agree.
Keep the record with the truck, where the next service provider can find it. If the established quantity changes after hardware work, retain the reason and the supporting application information. Avoid turning a previous invoice's quantity into a permanent specification without checking what that service covered.
If the complaint is oil loss, contamination or a pressure warning, describe that concern separately. Establishing refill capacity does not diagnose a leak, a contamination path, a pressure-sensor fault or a lubrication-system failure. Follow the truck's warning instructions and obtain the matching assessment.
What should accompany an oil-service parts request?
Supply the engine identity, installed filter markings, standard/auxiliary arrangement and the provider's confirmed service requirements. Ask the supplier to verify the exact application and contents, including any separately required seals or service items.
Confirm the installed filter arrangement with ATP
Use ATP's part-fitment request with identifiers and safe photos. Application, package contents and availability require confirmation.
Common C15 oil-capacity questions
Is 40 quarts correct for every C15?
No. It is the listed approximate figure for the dated BXS/MXS example above, not a universal C15 specification.
Do the example figures already include standard filters?
Yes. Keep the standard-filter basis distinct from any auxiliary filtration on the actual installation.
Does the later official preview confirm the 2007 capacity?
No. The preview confirms edition and engine coverage; it does not expose refill figures.
Can an industrial C15 capacity be used for a truck?
Do not transfer it on the model name alone. Obtain the matching on-highway application information.
What should happen after a pan or dipstick change?
Have the provider confirm the installed arrangement, applicable capacity and verified level indication, and record the result.
