Mechanical DT466 Starting and Injection Pump: Bosch MW Example
Back to the ATP Garage guide libraryInternational / Mechanical DT466 / Starting and pump evidence
Quick answer: Identify the installed mechanical pump, then separate the fuel-supply path from the injection-pump finding. A hard start, a reported loss of prime or improvement after priming does not by itself identify which component failed. The dated example here is International's September 1984 CGES-375 Bosch MW system for the DT-466C; use matching information for a different pump or engine. [1]
Application: Mechanical DT466 starting and pump-selection planning, using only the documented DT-466C/PE(S)-6 MW arrangement as the technical example. This is not a diagnosis or priming procedure for every mechanical DT466, a different Bosch/other pump, DT466E HEUI or later DT engine. No universal serial range or test limit is asserted.
Which mechanical pump and engine are actually installed?
Start with the full engine identification record, vehicle VIN, pump/governor markings and known engine or fuel-system replacements. Use the DT466 and DT466E identification guide if the installed system has not been established. International's dated engine guide separates mechanical PLN and electronic HEUI families. [2]
CGES-375, September 1984, identifies its Bosch MW application as DT-466C. It describes separate identification plates for the pump and governor assembly. [1] Preserve complete readable plate records and safe overview photos. Do not use one partial casting number or the label "mechanical DT466 pump" as the entire replacement specification.
What does the starting complaint actually look like?
Record whether the starter fails to engage, the engine cranks without firing, starting takes longer, or the engine starts and then stops. Note the last successful start, time parked, cold/warm conditions, fuel level and recent refueling or repairs. Keep "loses prime" as the reported pattern until the diagnostic record establishes what is occurring.
If the symptom changed after priming or filter service, record exactly what was done and how long the change lasted. Include whether the next start, after a similar parked interval, repeated the complaint. Avoid rewriting an intermittent problem as fixed after one successful start.
Why should supply findings be separated from injection-pump findings?
In the documented MW layout, fuel travels from the tank through the primary filter to the supply pump, then through the final filter into the injection-pump housing. The injection pump meters and delivers fuel to the nozzles. Its return arrangement has a separate flow-control role. [1]
Use those distinctions when reading a report. Ask which part of the actual system was checked, under what conditions, and what the result established. A supply-side concern and an internal metering/delivery concern should not be combined into the single phrase "bad injection pump."
| Observation or report | Clarify before ordering |
|---|---|
| Reported loss of prime after parking | Which matched finding identifies the affected path or component? |
| Complaint followed filter or line work | What hardware and service operation changed, and what verification followed? |
| Supply test was satisfactory | Which additional finding supports an injection-pump or other repair? |
| Pump repair or replacement proposed | What confirmed defect, exact application and installation/calibration record support the quote? |
Why should filter and fuel-line history stay with the report?
The MW manual describes a hand-priming pump for filter-service context. It also identifies a particular hose between the final filter and pump housing as a pressure-wave damper. [1] Preserve any filter, hose, fitting or pump changes so the provider can compare the installed arrangement with the correct instructions.
Have the provider confirm the applicable post-service process and whether it was completed. This guide does not supply a universal bleed sequence, hose substitute or pressure target. A generic video for a DT466E or another mechanical pump is not the matched instruction for this MW example.
What should establish the need for injection-pump work?
Request the selected engine/pump-specific diagnostic procedure, equipment, results with units and conditions, interpretation and the component actually identified. Preserve satisfactory checks and incomplete checks as well as failures. If a pump specialist's assessment is required, keep that report with the vehicle's starting history.
CGES-375 section 5 requires calibration after pump or governor service/overhaul to establish timing, delivery and governor operation. [1] Ask the quote to explain the applicable calibration and installation verification. Do not substitute an unrecorded fuel, governor or timing adjustment for a diagnosed repair.
What should accompany the inquiry to ATP?
Send the full engine/VIN record, complete pump and governor identification, safe photos, starting pattern, recent fuel-system work and the confirmed diagnostic finding. State whether the request concerns a supply component, a line/connection item, the injection pump or another identified repair.
International's public Service Information overview describes VIN-based parts/service lookup with engine and feature filters. [3] Reconcile the vehicle record with the engine and pump actually installed. Ask the quote to confirm the intended application, supplied contents and any required setup work.
Have the diagnosed application checked
Use ATP's part-fitment request. Fitment, package contents and availability require confirmation.
Common mechanical DT466 starting and pump questions
Does a hard start prove that the injection pump is worn?
No. Preserve the pattern and obtain the matched component finding before ordering a pump.
Does this MW example cover every mechanical DT466?
No. The cited manual identifies DT-466C with the Bosch PE(S)-6 MW arrangement. Match a different installed system to its own information.
Are the supply pump and injection pump the same finding?
No. The documented layout gives them different fuel-path functions. Ask which component the evidence identifies.
Does one successful start after priming close an intermittent complaint?
Record the change and confirm the result under the original conditions before treating the repair as verified.
Should a pump quote include calibration and installation requirements?
Have the provider specify the applicable requirements and verification; the MW manual expressly addresses calibration after service.
