MaxxForce DT EGR Faults: Codes and Diagnostic Information
Back to the ATP Garage guide libraryInternational / MaxxForce DT / EGR fault information
Quick answer: For a MaxxForce DT EGR fault, preserve the complete SPN/FMI, code description, status and freeze-frame report, then match the diagnostic to the installed engine. A report saying only "EGR code" loses distinctions needed to select the correct diagnostic branch. [1]
Application: Code-record examples use Navistar's 2010 MaxxForce DT/9/10 bulletin; the EGR diagnostic example is its 2010-and-newer DT/9/10 May 2015 document. These are dated examples, not universal repair instructions or a serial-number substitute. Do not transfer them to EPA2007 MaxxForce DT, DT466E or MaxxForce 11/13.
Which engine information should accompany an EGR complaint?
Send the VIN, full ESN, emissions identification and any replacement-engine or control-system history. Use the International engine-identification guide to keep the vehicle record and installed engine together. Ask which application the service provider selected and which current procedure applies.
Describe the event in ordinary terms: warning lamp, reduced power, rough running, smoke or an issue that appeared after service. Include the load, temperature conditions and when it occurs. Separate observations from the proposed cause. "Lamp came on during a warm restart" is more useful history than an unsupported statement that the valve stuck.
Why do SPN, FMI and code status all matter?
IK1200516 revision 5, February 11, 2013, explains the SPN/FMI identification used by the stated 2010 application. It distinguishes active, previous-active, pending and permanent records. It also explains that freeze-frame information records conditions when a code set and is lost when that DTC is cleared. [1]
Request the original scan export before clearing anything. Preserve every listed fault and its status, not just a cropped photograph of one line. If the shop has already cleared codes, record that fact and keep any earlier report. Ask what returned under the complaint conditions and what remains unconfirmed.
| Include | Why it helps the next assessment |
|---|---|
| Complete SPN and FMI | Preserves the precise reported condition. |
| Description and status | Keeps the present complaint separate from its history. |
| Freeze-frame and original export | Retains the captured event context. |
| Other faults and recent work | Lets the provider select the appropriate diagnostic order. |
| Procedure, results and conclusion | Shows why a particular repair was proposed. |
Does an EGR flow code identify a failed valve?
IK1201245 revision 5, May 7, 2015, treats valve-position/internal, communication/PWM and flow/test faults as different branches. Its examples include SPN 2791/FMI 2 or 8 and SPN 2659/FMI 10, 14, 20 or 21. The selected path can involve connector/circuit findings, other faults, intake leakage, MAF calibration prerequisites, operational/air-management results and restriction checks. [2]
That distinction makes a complete report valuable before a parts purchase. Ask the provider to name the chosen branch, the findings that support the conclusion and any remaining checks. Keep satisfactory results too. They help explain what was ruled out and make an incomplete diagnosis easier to recognize.
The historical low-flow/test branch separately assesses mixer restriction and, later, cooler plugging. It is not a blanket instruction to replace a valve whenever a flow complaint appears. [2] Ask whether the report established a valve, wiring, air-path or restriction concern. Have the provider use current matching specifications and procedures for testing and repair.
Do not treat a named bulletin as a universal authorization to disconnect parts, run tests or replace hardware. This guide reproduces no pin measurements, test commands, calibration procedure or disassembly instructions. A dated branch explains what information to request; its full current application must still be confirmed.
What if the truck also loses coolant?
Include the additions, warning history, observed leaks and cooling-system test report alongside the scan export. Use the linked MaxxForce DT coolant-loss and EGR-cooler guide for that evidence record. The two guides address different questions: where coolant is going, and what the reported control/flow condition establishes.
Ask the provider to explain whether one confirmed finding connects both complaints. Preserve separate findings if it does not. Do not describe the leak as repaired because a code was cleared, or describe the code as repaired because the coolant level was restored. Request the actual verification for each original complaint.
What should be confirmed before buying an EGR part?
International's public Service Information overview supports VIN-based lookup with engine and feature filters. [3] Supply the installed-engine record, actual component markings, diagnosed failure and safe connector/label photos. Ask which component and supplied contents the quotation covers.
Keep the diagnosis and application questions separate in the request: what has been established as faulty, and which replacement fits this installation? If either answer is unfinished, say so. Ask about required seals, installation information, setup and the provider's post-repair checks for the selected item.
Check the diagnosed application with ATP
Use the part-fitment request with the engine and component records. Include the complete diagnostic conclusion; fitment, package contents and availability require confirmation.
Common MaxxForce DT EGR questions
Is "SPN 2659" enough information to order a part?
No. Keep the FMI, status, description, engine record and diagnostic findings.
Should the original scan report be saved before clearing codes?
Yes. Preserve the complete export and captured conditions.
Does a flow fault always mean a valve needs replacement?
No. The matching diagnostic branch and its findings determine the proposed repair.
Can an EPA2007 engine use these 2010 examples as its repair instructions?
No. Obtain the exact earlier application information.
Does the coolant-loss guide replace an EGR fault diagnosis?
No. Keep the leak evidence and code evidence together, with verification for both complaints.
