Quick answer: Identify the installed mechanical or electronic engine, oil/filter arrangement and service operation before choosing an oil fill. The historical mechanical-truck example below separates crankcase and with-filter refill entries; the DT466E bulletin has a different, exact serial-scoped row. Neither is a universal DT466 capacity. Match the complete application and final-level instructions. [4] [1]

Application: Mechanical DT466 and DT466E oil-service identification. The mechanical example is the specific truck configuration documented in TM 5-3820-256-24-3, May 1989, with its October 1989 title change. The electronic example is IK1201299 revision 13, September 30, 2021, limited to its stated control-system and serial row. The July 2004 filter recall has separate chassis limits. Other mechanical installations, other electronic serials, EGR engines and MaxxForce DT need their own matched information.

How do I identify the correct oil service fill for a mechanical DT466?

First establish the installed engine family. International's 2018 Engine Guide gives mechanical and electronic engines separate identification chapters. Use the DT466 and DT466E identification guide when that distinction is unresolved. A search result headed DT466 does not settle the system or service fill. [5]

A concrete historical example is TM 5-3820-256-24-3, May 8, 1989, authenticating manufacturer literature for the LP-12 well-drilling system truck. Its October 4, 1989 change renames the model LP-165F299. The contents identify DT/DTI 466 service literature; printed page 4-11, section 4-2.2, lists these unit refill entries: [4]

Entry in this historical truck manual Quantity as printed Application limit
Crankcase 18 Qts. (17 L) Documented truck configuration only.
Crankcase with oil filter 22 Qts. (20.8 L) Same documented configuration, with filter.

The useful distinction is the refill basis. These rows do not establish a quantity for every mechanical DT466, an agricultural installation, another oil-pan/filter arrangement or an overhaul. Do not apply the DT466E row below to a mechanical engine. [4]

Have the service provider identify the current instructions for the actual installed engine and vehicle. Keep the complete serial and VIN with readable oil-pan, filter/header and level-gauge identification where available. Include known engine, pan or housing replacements. Ask the provider to reconcile any difference between the original vehicle record and the present hardware.

Request the applicable routine-service quantity in its stated units, whether the filter is changed, and the specified final-level method. Keep the answer with the work order. A supplier's generic engine-name capacity, an unverified dipstick mark or the amount drained from an engine of unknown service history should not be the only basis for the new fill. An unresolved application stays unresolved until it is checked.

Which DT466E oil-capacity number is actually supported?

IK1201299 revision 13, September 30, 2021, is a quick reference for capacities with an oil-filter change. Read its engine description and serial range together. Its broad year heading does not extend a specific row to an engine outside that row. [1]

Documented engine/control row Engine serial range With filter change, as printed
DT/HT466E/530E (3 Box and CEC) 0933834-1194038 26 L (28 U.S. quarts)

If your serial or control system is different, this table leaves that application's quantity unresolved. Obtain the current matching service information. Keep the quantity's original units and service description; do not treat rounded litre/quart figures as a precise conversion or substitute a dry-engine/overhaul quantity for an oil-change refill.

Why should the filter and chassis be checked together?

A historical example is International recall G-04504-R1, July 2004. It concerns certain 4x4 and 6x6 versions of 7300, 7400 and 7500 built September 27, 2001 through March 8, 2004, with specified DT466 and DT/HT530 engines. Under certain braking conditions, the front-drive-axle universal joint could contact and puncture the oil filter. [2]

The recall required a shorter filter and revised oil-capacity and service-interval information for the affected vehicles. Have the complete VIN, engine identity, campaign record and installed arrangement checked; the chassis name or a similar-looking filter alone does not establish eligibility. A previous filter number is supporting evidence, not a reason to ignore the installed adapter or campaign history. [2]

Preserve readable filter markings, a safely obtained view of its mounting area, the oil-pan identification if available, and known engine or filter-housing replacements. Have the provider reconcile those details before supplying a filter. This guide does not prescribe an adapter conversion or authorize replacing a short filter with a longer one.

What belongs on the oil-service request?

  • Engine: complete installed serial, model/control-system record and known replacement history.
  • Vehicle: full VIN, chassis model, build information and drive configuration.
  • Hardware: installed oil pan, filter/header arrangement, readable filter markings and relevant campaign or modification records.
  • Operation: routine oil-and-filter service, oil-only drain, repair refill or overhaul; identify which operation the quoted quantity describes.
  • Instructions: matching document/version, oil quality/viscosity requirement, refill basis, filter identity and final-level check.

International's public Service Information description supports VIN-based service/parts lookup with engine and feature-code filters. Keep that lookup together with the actual installed-engine record, especially where an engine or housing has been replaced. [3]

How should the final oil level be confirmed?

The capacity bulletin calls for the manufacturer's recommended initial amount, circulation, the applicable manufacturer's level check and adjustment as needed. [1] Have the service provider use the matched operating instructions for that process, including its stated conditions. This overview does not supply a universal drain-back time, oil grade, service interval or permission to run an engine with an unresolved lubrication warning.

Keep the confirmed refill amount, units, filter identity, final level and completed service date with the engine record. If the observed level and the expected refill do not agree, have the application, hardware and measurement method reconciled before accepting the job as complete.

What should accompany a filter inquiry to ATP?

Send the identification and hardware record above, the service operation and the filter requested by the matched lookup. Ask the quote to confirm the intended application and supplied contents. For a starting, ICP or rough-running complaint, keep the DT466E starting and injector evidence with the diagnostic request rather than treating routine filter service as a proven repair.

Have the installed filter application checked

Use ATP's part-fitment request. Filter fitment, package contents and availability require confirmation.

Common mechanical DT466 and DT466E oil-service questions

Does every DT466E take 28 U.S. quarts?

No. The cited 28-quart row has a specific control-system description, ESN range and filter-change basis; applications can differ.

Can the year alone confirm that capacity?

No. Match the row's engine identity and complete serial as well as the installed hardware and service operation.

Is an old filter number enough to order a replacement?

Keep it with the VIN, engine and installed filter arrangement, then have the application checked against current information.

Does the July 2004 recall cover every DT466E?

No. It names certain severe-service chassis, drive configurations, build dates and engine identities. Have the vehicle record checked.

Can the oil-and-filter quantity be used for an overhaul fill?

Use the instructions for the actual operation. A quantity labeled with filter change does not establish every other refill or priming requirement.

Does the 1989 truck example mean every mechanical DT466 takes 22 quarts with the filter?

No. It documents a particular vehicle configuration. Match your installed engine, vehicle and oil/filter arrangement to the applicable service instructions.

Can a DT466E capacity row be used for a mechanical DT466?

No. The electronic bulletin row has its own control-system and serial scope. It does not establish the mechanical engine refill.
