Quick answer: Record actual coolant additions, the level-check conditions and any visible leak or diagnostic result before selecting ISM cooling parts. Identify the installed control/emissions arrangement, then have the source of loss located. A wet assembly, a low-level warning or an absent puddle does not by itself establish the failed component.

Follow the truck's low-coolant and overheating warning instructions. Do not remove a pressure cap from a hot engine. Cummins' archived ISM procedure warns about hot coolant spray. [1]

Application: Qualitative examples from the February 2000 ISM Spanish manual and November 2014 engine views. The later CM870/CM876 component captions are separate application examples, not extensions of every earlier diagnostic. Current engine/chassis instructions govern testing; no pressure, temperature, fill quantity or coolant-mixture target is supplied.

Which information helps investigate ISM coolant loss?

Record what was added, the amount and dates, miles or hours between additions, and how the level was checked. State whether the concern followed cooling-system work or appeared during a trip. Keep temperature indications and warning messages alongside the loss record, without treating them as the same observation.

Compare level records taken under the vehicle's specified checking conditions. Label uncertain amounts or observations honestly. A note that the tank was low once contains less diagnostic information than a dated record describing repeated additions under consistent conditions.

Observation Useful evidence Question still open
Repeated additions Amount, dates and level-check conditions. Has continuing loss been demonstrated?
Wet component or connection Safe photos and where fresh leakage begins. What is the actual source?
No visible puddle When the loss occurs and shop findings. Which path has been investigated?
Concern after repair Items changed, draining/filling work and verification. How does it compare with the original complaint?

Does coolant loss identify a head gasket or EGR cooler?

No. The February 2000 ISM manual separates external and internal coolant-loss trees. Its external example includes connections, cap and vent/fill-line context; its internal example includes compressor, oil-cooler, cylinder-head and other applicable equipment paths. The matched diagnostic finding must identify the source. [1]

Ask the shop which observation supports the proposed repair and what alternatives were checked. Keep a photograph of the wet area separate from the finding that establishes where the leak starts. If the quote names a cooler or head assembly, ask for the test result identifying that assembly.

Why identify CM870 or CM876 cooling equipment before ordering?

Cummins' Engine Views, modified November 12, 2014, separately labels CM870 EGR cooler supply, return and vent tubes. Its CM876 automotive view identifies EGR cooling and turbocharger coolant-return components. Those captions help distinguish an assembly from its connected plumbing; they do not diagnose a leak or establish one layout for every ISM. [2]

Include the installed engine's full ESN, model, CPL, control/emissions identity and replacement history with the truck VIN. Use the actual component markings and safe label photos. Our M11/ISM identification guide explains how to organize that record.

Have the quote identify whether it covers a cooling assembly, tube, connection, seal or another diagnosed item. An EGR-equipped application still needs a source finding; the presence of an EGR cooler does not establish that its core has failed.

What should a coolant-loss test report include?

Ask for the test method, location, conditions, actual result and interpretation against the applicable service information. Keep these details attached to the repair estimate. A statement such as "failed pressure test" omits the source and conditions needed to assess the component decision.

Record what the technician found rather than translating every test into a part name yourself. For an intermittent or after-parking concern, ask whether the verification represented those reported conditions. State any remaining uncertainty in the work order so a repeat complaint can be compared fairly.

This guide provides no running-test, component-isolation, pressure-cap modification or cooling-system pressurization instructions. Those procedures belong to trained service personnel using the information matched to the installed engine and chassis.

What should you send with an ISM cooling-parts request?

Send the engine/vehicle identifiers, diagnosed component, its complete markings or safe photos, repair history and the supporting report. Ask the quote to confirm the application, supplied assembly or service item, included seals/connections and any required installation scope.

Cummins' public parts guidance supports ESN-based lookup and matching service literature; it does not confirm a particular ATP listing's fitment or availability. [3] Keep the actual part and engine records together before approving an order.

If there is also an oil-pressure warning, preserve that report separately and follow the truck's warning instructions. Our ISM/M11 oil-pressure guide explains how to organize indication and lubrication findings before parts selection.

Common ISM coolant-loss questions

Does a low-coolant warning prove the water pump failed?

No. Ask for the finding that identifies the actual source of the loss.

Does no puddle prove an internal engine leak?

The absence of a visible puddle is an observation, not a complete diagnosis. Preserve the loss history and matched test report.

Does an EGR cooler in the parts diagram prove its core is leaking?

No. Distinguish the assembly, connected plumbing and the location actually identified by the diagnosis.

Can I use another ISM's pressure-test setting?

Use the current instructions and equipment limits for the actual engine/chassis arrangement.

What should the cooling repair quote state?

The exact application, diagnosed component, supporting finding, included items and plan to recheck the original complaint.
