Cat C7 Oil Capacity: Sump, Filter and Final-Level Checks
Back to the ATP Garage guide libraryCaterpillar / C7 / Oil service and installed application
Quick answer: A Cat C7 does not have one oil-fill answer for every truck. In the cited 2010 WAX on-highway extract, the approximate refill with a filter change is 18 L (19 qt) for the shallow sump or 25.5 L (27 qt) for the deep sump. Confirm the installed sump, filter arrangement and matched level-check instructions before using either example. [1]
Application: The numerical refill example is SEBU7766-07, WAX00001-Up, published April 1 and updated April 27, 2010. A separate March 2009 SEBU8083-09 C7/C9 publication includes C7S1-Up and C7W1-Up and supplies different calibration context below. Keep these publications separate. Neither an engine-family name nor an older truck's service invoice establishes capacity for another C7, C7.1, C7.2 or industrial installation.
What do the WAX shallow- and deep-sump figures include?
The source labels these approximate refill quantities and separates a filter change from a refill without one. Its standard-filter arrangement is included; auxiliary filtration requires additional capacity information from the OEM. [1]
| SEBU7766-07 WAX example | With filter change | Without filter change |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow sump | 18 L (19 qt) | 16 L (17 qt) |
| Deep sump | 25.5 L (27 qt) | 23.7 L (25 qt) |
Have the service provider identify the pan actually installed, rather than choosing the larger number as an allowance. Write the units on the work order. A container count is not useful if its size is unknown, and a filter invoice alone does not identify the sump.
Before service, ask which current manufacturer document applies to the full engine serial and installation. Record any engine replacement, changed pan or remote-filter arrangement. If the shop cannot reconcile an earlier fill record with the installed hardware, keep that discrepancy open until the application and level evidence are resolved.
Why can a calibration table differ from a refill figure?
The separate March 2009 publication says installation angle and sideways slant affect the indicated level. Its C7 Table 16 separates quantities for level-mark calibration, filter filling and a final measured addition called quantity D. The listed A+B+C quantities total 18 L for shallow sump or 25 L for standard/deep sump, before D. The final recorded lubrication-system capacity includes the amount needed to reach the calibrated FULL mark after the prescribed checks. Auxiliary filtration has its own OEM requirements. [2]
This is why the 25 L calibration subtotal from that publication must not replace the 25.5 L WAX approximate refill example. They have different publication scope and describe different records. Do not average them, round one into the other or treat the calibration subtotal as every truck's finished fill.
Ask the provider to document whether the level-gauge markings were verified for the installation and which final capacity was recorded. An unexplained dipstick reading calls for reconciliation with the matched instructions. Do not alter the markings simply to make an assumed fill quantity appear correct. Follow the complete level-check and service procedure for the installed engine.
What should stay with the truck after the oil service?
Keep a single service record containing the full engine serial, truck VIN, pan identification, filter arrangement, oil identification, quantity added, units and final level result. Include the manufacturer reference used and any unresolved difference from the previous invoice. This makes the next service easier to verify without turning an old example into a universal specification.
For later top-ups, record the amount, date and mileage or hours separately from the original fill. Tell the service provider if the concern began after an oil change or another repair. A capacity question and an oil-consumption or warning complaint should remain separate entries until the findings connect them.
The official February 2019 SEBU7766-08 cover confirms publication coverage for listed C7 prefixes; its one-page preview provides no refill instructions or proof of parts interchange. [3] Confirm the complete current information for the actual engine.
Ask for the correct service part
Use the ATP part-fitment form with the serial, VIN, safely readable installed markings and the provider's confirmed component request. Exact fitment, included items and availability require confirmation. For a separate starting complaint, use the C7 hot-start and injection-actuation guide; adding a presumed oil quantity does not diagnose a no-start.
Common C7 oil-capacity questions
Is 19 qt correct for every C7?
No. It is the shallow-sump, with-filter example in the specified 2010 WAX extract.
Does the WAX table distinguish a filter change?
Yes. Preserve the correct column and the installed filtration arrangement.
Is 25 L the final capacity in the 2009 calibration example?
No. It is the deep-sump A+B+C subtotal before the final recorded quantity D.
Should I change the dipstick marks to match an online number?
No. Have the installation and markings verified through the complete matched manufacturer procedure.
What should I send with a parts request?
The full engine serial, VIN, installed component markings and the provider's confirmed service requirement.
