Ordering Heavy-Duty Parts: 5 Steps to Prevent Shipping Delays
When your Class 8 truck is down, every hour costs you money. At Advanced Truck Parts, we process dozens of orders every day and understand how critical fast turnaround is for your business. To prevent any potential shipping delays and avoid misidentification of parts, we have outlined 5 simple steps to follow when submitting your next order.
1. The VIN is Your Best Friend
Always provide the 17-digit VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). For Class 8 trucks, the VIN is the master key that helps us filter out thousands of similar parts to find the exact configuration for your specific build.
2. ESN: The Engine Serial Number
When ordering engine-specific components—like turbochargers, actuators, or fuel injectors—the VIN is often not enough. Manufacturers (Cummins, Detroit, PACCAR, Volvo) frequently update parts mid-year. Providing the Engine Serial Number (ESN) from the engine data plate ensures you get the exact hardware compatibility required.
3. Snap a Picture of the Data Plate
If you are replacing a sensor, an HVAC blower, or a specific electronic module, take a clear photo of the OEM part tag on the old unit. Even if the part is greasy, a photo of the manufacturer’s part number or barcode is often more valuable than a verbal description.
4. Specify "Engine-Driven" vs. "Chassis"
Be clear about what you are troubleshooting. For Class 8 components, there is a major difference between engine-side parts (e.g., cooling systems) and chassis-side parts (e.g., suspension or air tanks). If you aren't sure, tell us the engine model and the specific location of the part.
5. Double-Check the "Ship-To" Address
It sounds basic, but it matters. If you are a fleet owner or an owner-operator, make sure the delivery address is accessible for a freight truck if you are ordering large items like DPF filters or cooling modules.
The Bottom Line
We want to get you back on the road. By providing the VIN, ESN, and a clear photo of the old part tag, you eliminate 90% of order errors.
